When building their new pig barn in Gits, Jomagro had one clear objective: to create a healthy and stable barn climate. Effective ventilation plays a key role in achieving this. That is why they chose Vervaeke’s adjustable sidewall ventilation system, which ensures a continuous supply of fresh air without creating draughts at animal level.
Why a good barn climate matters
A healthy barn climate is the foundation for healthy animals and strong production results. However, ventilating a pig barn remains a challenge. Sufficient fresh air must be supplied, while preventing cold outside air from reaching the animals directly.
When pigs are continuously exposed to draughts, the risk of stress, respiratory problems and reduced performance increases. The key is to provide enough fresh air without creating unwanted air currents in the different compartments.
How does the adjustable sidewall ventilation system work?
At Jomagro, fresh outside air is introduced in a controlled manner through a Polysystem with additional bird netting installed in the sidewall of the barn. The opening is automatically controlled by the central ventilation system according to the required airflow. This ensures that exactly the right amount of fresh air enters the barn at all times.
Instead of flowing directly towards the animals, the air first follows a carefully designed route.
1. Fresh air through the sidewall
The adjustable ventilation curtains automatically open and close according to the ventilation requirements inside the barn. This ensures that the fresh air supply is continuously adapted to the prevailing conditions.
2. Air supply through the side corridor
The fresh air first enters the side corridor of the barn. This prevents it from being blown directly onto the animals, allowing it to spread gradually and evenly before reaching the different compartments.
3. Air distribution beneath the slatted floor
From the side corridor, the air continues to flow beneath the slatted floor towards the different compartments. Along the way, the influence of outside winds is reduced, ensuring a more stable and controlled airflow.
4. Draught-free ventilation in the compartments
The air rises gently through the slatted floor into each compartment. This ensures that all animals receive sufficient fresh air without being exposed to draughts or cold air currents.
The result is a stable barn climate with consistently high air quality, providing optimal comfort for the animals.
Computer-controlled ventilation in every season
The sidewall ventilation is automatically controlled by a central computerised ventilation system. As a result, the system continuously adapts to the indoor temperature, the season and the ventilation requirements inside the barn.
During warm periods, more fresh air is supplied, while in colder weather the opening is automatically reduced. This keeps the barn climate stable throughout the year, without exposing the animals to draughts.
Extra protection against pests
For this project, our Polysystem was fitted with a metal mesh. This keeps birds and other pests out of the barn, while preventing rodents from chewing through or damaging the mesh.
A healthy barn climate starts with a well-designed ventilation concept
By choosing adjustable sidewall ventilation, Jomagro has invested in a sustainable solution for a healthy barn climate. A continuous supply of fresh air, even air distribution and draught-free ventilation work together to improve animal comfort and support better performance.
We would like to thank Jomagro for their trust and the pleasant cooperation. We are proud to have contributed to the construction of this modern pig barn and wish them every success with their new installation.
